Love Letters Between the Pages: Sharing Stories Through Hidden Books in Hyde Park
This Valentine’s Day, something quietly beautiful is unfolding among the winter paths of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.
Here at Venelle, we invited a small group of the older people we support at home to take part in a simple but meaningful act of connection: to share a book that holds deep personal significance, along with a handwritten letter explaining why it matters to them.
These carefully wrapped books are now hidden throughout the Royal Parks - not as lost objects, but as gifts for strangers to discover. Inside each one is a story of love, memory and lived experience, offered freely to the city.
Because these are not simply books.
They are vessels of a lifetime.
Each participant chose a book connected to an important chapter of their life.
One client, Mrs B, shared Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats - a book she once read aloud to her late daughter. In her handwritten note, she recalls the laughter they shared together and expresses a hope that whoever finds the book will cherish small, joyful moments with the people they love.
Mr B selected The Secret of Secrets, a story he now reads in tandem each week with his son. Their conversations about the plot have become a treasured ritual of connection. As he writes in his letter, the time they share discussing the book has come to mean far more than the story itself.
Mrs D chose a vintage cookbook given to her by her sister on her 25th birthday. For more than fifty years, it has helped her cook for family, celebrate milestones and create a warm, welcoming home.
“Every page reminds me of my sister and those early days of motherhood,” she writes, passing the book on with heartfelt wishes for its finder.
A Valentine’s Gift to London
Valentine’s Day also marks International Book Giving Day - a moment dedicated to sharing stories and encouraging the love of reading.
By placing these books in public spaces, the people we support are offering something deeply personal to London: not just literature, but companionship, reflection and kindness. It is a reminder that older generations remain active storytellers, with wisdom and generosity that continue to enrich the communities around them.
Our founder and CEO, Louise Blezzard, reflects:
“These are much more than just books because they are vessels for the most important moments in a person's life. Those involved wanted to share these memories to show that they are still active storytellers with much to give back to London.”
If You Discover a Book
If you happen to find one of the hidden books, it is yours to keep.
We simply invite you to read the letter inside, pause for a moment of connection, and perhaps carry that kindness forward in your own way.
Because love letters do not always arrive in envelopes.
Sometimes, they wait quietly between the pages of a book, ready for the right person to find them.
